Taylor Hinton

What does Taylor Hinton enjoy most about teaching “Family and Consumer Science” in Meadville’s Middle School? Her answer is as immediate as it is passionate: “Having fun with kids!” And teaching not just lessons on food, but on life. Thus, her 7th and 8th graders learn how important teamwork is while preparing (and sometimes bickering over) a meal together. Similarly, she teaches not just “herbs and spices,” but also creativity and self-empowerment when her students combine different flavors into a one-of-a-kind popcorn. She also takes her students into the community. Visiting the MARC garden or the Market House gives her learners an opportunity to think critically about where our foods come from and how local vs. global food systems impact nutritional value, the economics of a community, and carbon emissions via food miles.
